Abstract

This study aimed to identify the factors inhibiting English language acquisition at SMP Babul Istiqamah and to explore the students’ efforts to overcome students' problems in learning English. This research employed a descriptive qualitative. The research participants consisted of 50 eighth-grade students.  The data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving the students  interviews with the English. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis by identifying, classifying, and interpreting the emerging themes. The findings revealed five major factors inhibiting English language acquisition at SMP Babul Istiqamah:  limited vocabulary mastery, low self-confidence and speaking anxiety, limited exposure to English outside the classroom, an unsupportive teaching and learning environment, and low learning motivation. These factors affect to students' ability to develop their English language skills effectively. The study also found that the English students’ have implemented several efforts to address these problems, including using interactive and student-centered teaching methods, motivating students and building their self-confidence, increasing students' vocabulary and providing more opportunities for language practice, providing individual guidance for students with greater learning difficulties, and creating a supportive classroom environment that encourages active participation without fear of making mistakes or being criticized. These findings suggest that overcoming students' English learning difficulties requires the integration of effective teaching strategies, meaningful language practice, and a supportive learning environment.
